Stolen Futures
About the piece
Transcript:
Hi everyone, my name is Nithuja Kalaiselvam. I’m the artist of these pieces, collectively titled “Stolen Futures”.
When creating my pieces for this showcase, I wanted to show the broken system set in place that determines your class and worth, depending on the race you were born with. We are all born as one thing: human. But the minute we start looking at the things that differentiate us, like race, gender, age, etc, we begin to lose the unity that we should have as a society. Through these pieces I want to show just how wrong it feels to label someone by their race. I want to have the audience feel the responsibility of taking the future away from them, through the transformation from a person with a multitude of hopes and dreams, to one whose life has been decided for them, simply because of the way they were born. If it feels wrong to see the futures of these babies, these human beings, decided by their skin colour, this practice shouldn’t be excused in the workplace, in schools, or anywhere in your community. Identifying these issues in society, and bringing them to light, is the first step towards righting our wrongs.
We are more than our race.
We are human.
Thank you.
