Ballroom

The TKBA or the Toronto Kiki Ballroom Alliance is an organization that started due to the need to bring Ballroom into the City of Toronto. The Ballroom Scene is an African-American and Latino underground LGBTQ+ subculture that originated in 1920s New York City and began to be more well-known in the 1960s. TKBA was founded in 2010 by Twysted Miyake-Mugler and Legendary Motha Vixen. It’s a space for Black and other radicalized LGBTQI+ youth facing various barriers and trauma seeking community and nurture. The TKBA provides a safe space for them to be seen, protected and celebrated. In this piece is a series of photographs from the Black Excellence Kiki Ball that took place February 4, 2023.
