About The Preformance

Prior coming to Canada, Qjiel would volunteer at the Manila North Cemetery where thousands of families live inside the mausoleums. Children in this community would fall behind in school due to lack of literacy skills (reading and writing). Qjiel would teach these kids how to read and write. Eventually, a storybook was co-created with kids as proof of their improved literacy skills. This book is made of love from the Manila North Cemetery all the way to Toronto to prove that through education, one can overcome extreme poverty.

Meet the artist:

Qjiel Giuliano Mikhl Mariano

Qjiel is a newcomer to Canada navigating what it means to be a settler in traditional territories. He brings his Filipino heritage to encourage spaces to be taken up by the BIPOC community. His time in the Philippines is all about the art of giving to the underrepresented where he dedicated most of his weekends volunteering with children living inside a cemetery. You will witness how to journal and capture powerful human stories while sharing them to the public to make a meaningful impact for the community
